How do students check out library books? The students use the online cataloging system, Destiny, to search for books and place books on hold. After the student puts a book on hold, the librarian checks it out and delivers the book to the student's English teacher.
How does the student know when the library book is due? The due date will be stamped inside the front cover of the book and the student can see the due date when logged into Destiny.
How do the students return library books? There will be a large tub placed outside the main library doors where students will put books when they are ready to return them.
How can I access the library in Schoology? Email the librarian at jennifer.davis@dcsms.org to request the course code.
DCMS Library Mission Statement
The Desoto Central Middle Schools mission is to provide an innovative 21st century learning environment that not only educates and promotes effective use of information, but also inspires lifelong learning, a love of reading, and a sense of pride and strength in our community.
Welcome
DON'T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR REMIND 101 FOR LIBRARY MESSAGES!!
The information is located in the 'forms' section.
LIBRARY SCHEDULE
At this time, students will NOT be coming to the library with their English classes. They will be checking out books remotely through Destiny. I have shared a video with the English teachers explaining how to login to Destiny and place a book on hold. I will deliver books to English teachers. Students will pick them up from there.
Students are allowed to checkout TWO books at a time for a FOUR week checkout window. If you need longer than four weeks, you will need to stop by the main doors of the library in the morning to recheck your book. You MUST have your library book with you in order to renew it.
SELECTION OF MATERIALS
Materials are selected to serve both teachers and students. The library media center contains a balanced and comprehensive collection of media. This collection contributes to the instructional program of the school, and also includes materials that provide for recreation and enrichment.
In general, learning resources shall be selected for their strengths, rather than rejected for their weaknesses. The following criteria are used as guidelines when I make selections: literary and artistic excellence; lasting importance or significance to a field of knowledge; contribution to the curriculum and the educational goals of the school; favorable reviews found in standard selection sources; reputation of the author, producer, and/or publisher; high degree of potential user appeal; quality, durability, and variety of format; value commensurate with cost and/or need.
YOUNG ADULT (YA) SECTION
The DCMS library also has a YA (young adult) section. This section can be checked out by any DCMS student. However, a signed permission slip is required for any student wishing to get books from this section. If you would like your child to be able to check books out from this section, the permission slip is located in the 'forms' section. Print it and return it to the school at your convenience.
The materials in this section are marked YA for the following reasons: the reading level is on a high school or adult reading level; and the book content is on a high school or adult maturity level.
ONE LAST NOTE
I do extensive research on materials before purchasing them. It is my job to provide a variety of resources to all of our students. It is, however, the parents' job to make the final decision about what is appropriate for their families. I welcome your questions and comments on materials in the DCMS library.
